Welcome to Crime in Iowa
The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program serves as the central repository for crime and arrest data within Iowa. Chapter 692.15 of the Code of Iowa requires law enforcement agencies within the state to report crime and arrest data to the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s UCR program, which in turn generates annual statistics. Data is also shared with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), for inclusion in national publications.
Iowa has reported incident-based data since the early 1990s. Incident-based data includes details on each single crime incident – as well as on separate offenses within the same incident – including information on victims, known offenders, relationships between victims and offenders, arrestees, and property involved in crimes.
The reports featured on this website replace the static publications produced by the Iowa UCR program. Data obtained through the reports are dynamic and, as a result, counts and rates may change over time.

Information About the Data
The Iowa UCR Program User Manual provides detailed information for each data element and value, including offense codes. Due to the robust nature of incident-based reporting, data may be analyzed at the incident, offense, property, victim, offender, or arrestee level.
In 2021, the Iowa UCR program updated its technical specification (i.e., reporting requirements) and developed a new state crime database. As part of the transition, the Iowa UCR program migrated data for 2016 through 2020. Due to differences in the technical specification for historical data, the reported results for 2016 through 2020 should be interpreted with caution. Starting in 2021, agency data will be published only after the agency achieves certification. While the certification process helps ensure the accuracy and completeness of reported data, agencies maintain responsibility for submitted crime data.
